You will still need something like Rudin’s Principles of Mathematical Analysis for a reference work, and you will need a book to serve as a reference to linear algebra, differential forms, manifolds, and other tools of modern analysis.

So the problems are probably not the best for self study, unless you’ve had training in math competitions. One gets an insight into not only mathematics but a unique and brilliant mind. This is by no means an easy read. Although people with interest in such things as engineering can gain something from this book, they are not the primary intended audience. Want to Read saving…. This an ideal read either on its own, or as a complement to a prescribed course text on analysis. There is a historical precedent for this attitude, since during Hardy’s time English mathematics was almost wholly concerned with the applied side continuing the tradition of Newton and many other fine purf mathematicians over the years.
